RIDGEFIELD
INTERNATIONAL CAMBRIDGE SCHOOL
Ridgefield Academy is a registered International Cambridge School and examination center (School number ZA338) founded in 2012 in Bloemfontein, South Africa, to cater to the growing need amongst South African school children for a world class international education. Ridgefield Academy is also registered with the South African Department of Education (EMIS 445802259). Under the aegis of Ladybrand Academy, and in cooperation with its founder and principal Mr Fritz Crous, a group of seasoned academics from the University of the Free State began teaching the world renowned Cambridge syllabus to a small group of high school children from a private home. The little school, then named Bloemfontein Academy, soon outgrew its surroundings and moved to a complex on the edge of Bloemfontein’s northern suburbs. During 2017 the need for larger premises arose once again, and the school moved to a neighbouring building, a spacious double-story with views over a sprawling garden. Due to zoning restrictions and the need for future expansion, the decision was taken in 2018 to move our school to a large campus with existing instructional facilities. NATIONAL AND PRIMARY SCHOOL Over the years we have received numerous requests to offer the South African National Curriculum in addition to the Cambridge syllabus. In light thereof, we started offering the National Curriculum in 2020. Our National School is on the same premises as our International School, and many of our teachers teach at both schools. At the beginning of 2023, we accepted our first learners for our Primary School Programme. Currently, this programme is registered with the National Department of Education, although we use world-class international material and textbooks for our syllabus.  OUR NAME & MOTTO Between 2013 and 2018, the school was situated on the northern border of Bloemfontein, nestled between the upmarket suburb of Heuwelsig and the grasslands of Rayton. The name Ridgefield was derived from this location, aptly symbolising the synergistic relationship between nature and humanity, and its implications for the learning experience. This is indeed what our school is all about: Relishing the gifts of our Creator by committing ourselves to a life of responsibility. This we do by discovering who we are and what our calling in life is, but mostly by emphasising that such a discovery depends on the realisation that we are not here merely for ourselves, but also for others. Our motto Learning from the Heart expresses this. We believe that the intellect can only come into its own right when it is subjected to the greater calling of maintaining good and healthy relationships with those around us, especially those who are less privileged than us. OUR BELIEFS We are convinced that spiritual and emotional health is a prerequisite to true academic advancement. A school should be a safe haven where these can be developed, and so we do everything in our ability to ensure that our learners enjoy their learning experience in an environment where they are accepted and appreciated. Along with the Fins, who have become world renowned for their educational model,  we believe that a happy student fares much better than an anxious one. Our learner-centered approach does not detract from our high academic standards. Our pass rates are aligned with international standards and are significantly higher than those of government schools. This means that our learners have to work harder than their peers who follow the South African National Curriculum. We support them in this, and provide them with all the guidance they need to utilise the rich resources that are available for Cambridge students worldwide.
